Counterposed phase velocity and energy–transport velocity vectors in a dielectric–magnetic uniaxial medium
When a plane wave is launched from a plane surface in a linear, homogenous, dielectric–magnetic, uniaxial medium, we show that its phase velocity and the energy–transport velocity vectors can be counterposed (i.e., lie on different sides of the surface normal) under certain circumstances.
متن کاملNegative Phase Velocity in Isotropic Dielectric–magnetic Mediums via Homogenization
ABSTRACT: We report on a strategy for achieving negative phase velocity (NPV) in a homogenized composite medium (HCM) conceptualized using the Bruggeman formalism. The constituent material phases of the HCM do not support NPV propagation. The HCM and its constituent phases are isotropic dielectric–magnetic mediums; the real parts of their permittivities/permeabilities are negative–valued wherea...
متن کاملCorrelation Length and Negative Phase Velocity in Isotropic Dielectric–magnetic Materials
A composite material comprising randomly distributed spherical particles of two different isotropic dielectric–magnetic materials is homogenized using the second–order strong– property–fluctuation theory in the long–wavelength approximation. Whereas neither of the two constituent materials by itself supports planewave propagation with negative phase velocity (NPV), the homogenized composite mat...
متن کاملNegative– and positive–phase–velocity propagation in an isotropic chiral medium moving at constant velocity
Analysis of electromagnetic planewave propagation in a medium which is a spatiotemporally homogeneous, temporally nonlocal, isotropic, chiral medium in a co–moving frame of reference shows that the medium is both spatially and temporally nonlocal with respect to all non–co–moving inertial frames of reference. Using the Lorentz transformations of electric and magnetic fields, we show that plane ...
متن کاملA New Condition to Identify Isotropic Dielectric–magnetic Materials Displaying Negative Phase Velocity
Non–dissipative mediums with both simultaneously negative permittivity and permeability were first investigated by Veselago [1] in 1968. These mediums support electromagnetic wave propagation in which the phase velocity is antiparallel to the direction of energy flow, and other unusual electromagnetic effects such as the reversal of the Doppler effect and Cerenkov radiation. After the publicati...
